RFS & FUM Follow-up Statement
Follow-Up Statement from Ramallah Friends School and Friends United Meeting
on the Burlington Incident

The Ramallah Friends School community welcomes the news of the arrest of the suspect involved in the recent attack on our alumni, Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdel Hamid, and Tahseen Ahmed, in Burlington, VT. This development brings a measure of relief to our community, which has been deeply shaken by this senseless act of violence.
We strongly urge the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this attack, considering the possibility that it was motivated by hate. The nature and circumstances of this incident point towards such a motive, and it is crucial that this angle is thoroughly investigated to ensure justice is served.
It is also imperative to address the broader context in Palestine and the deeply pressing issue at the heart of this incident – the dehumanization of Palestinians. Tragically, this incident is yet another example of the diminished regard for the lives, suffering, and inherent humanity of Palestinians. Let this incident be a stark reminder of the urgent need to challenge and change the discourse that deems us as anything less than fully human; people who are deserving of empathy, compassion, rights, life, freedom, and happiness.
Our thoughts remain with Hisham, Tahseen, and Kinnan as we continue to hope for their full and speedy recovery. We are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and alumni network worldwide. Your solidarity in holding our graduates and their families in the Light has been a source of strength for all of us.
