Bearing Witness to the Light
The quiet of the morning here, before our two campuses fill with energy, is often a moment for reflection on the witness of this place. We write not only to share an update, but also to convey the spirit of our community, a living expression of resilience, hope, and the values that guide our work together.
Each day begins with an act of courage. The ringing of our school bell is a sound that defies circumstances. It is answered by the footsteps of students, teachers, and staff for whom the journey to school is a daily testament to their commitment. Imagine a teacher leaving home two hours early, navigating a series of barriers and checkpoints that surround her village, never sure if the path will be open. For nearly 40% of our staff, this is not an occasional hardship; it is the relentless reality of their commute. There are days when the journey proves impossible, and our hearts ache with the absence of their presence. There are nights when staff and students, cut off from their families, sleep on a friend’s floor or in the school, finding sanctuary within these walls.
Yet within the walls of our school, something extraordinary happens. Learning not only continues but flourishes. Daily challenges seem to strengthen both focus and gratitude among our students. Though they carry burdens no young person should have to bear, they pursue their studies with extraordinary determination. They excel in their subjects and apply to universities worldwide, demonstrating perseverance through their academic achievements. In doing so, they demonstrate that education is not just a preparation for a career, but also a powerful expression of hope and a promise of a better future.
In the words of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, “We have on this earth what makes life worth living.” We witness this truth in the spark that lights a student’s eyes when a complex idea becomes clear, in the thoughtful discussions that ripple through the classroom, in the laughter that binds peers together, and in the continuous dedication of a teacher who guides with patience. Our school is a community making a collective choice: to affirm life, to seek knowledge, and to uphold the dignity of every person.
As Quakers, we are rooted in the belief that there is the Inner Light of God in every single person. Our mission here is to nurture that Light. In a context where peace and justice may feel distant, our school serves as a workshop where these values are lived and learned. The light that shines here reminds us that we are not here only to educate, but also to cultivate peace, justice, and integrity in a world that urgently needs them. Through this work, we prepare students to become a generation of leaders who will carry that light to others. We hold the Light, sometimes facing what seems like encroaching darkness, and we are continually humbled to see how brightly it reflects at us from our students.
We don't know what the upcoming months will bring. But we do know how we'll face them: with the same perseverance, compassion, and faith that have sustained this community for generations. Your friendship, prayers, and solidarity are essential to our foundation. You remind us that we are not alone, but part of a global family connected by a shared witness.
In Friendship,
Rania Ma’ayeh
