Lower School Receives Sustainability Award as Green School
Ramallah- The Lower School has been awarded Ramallah Municipality's prestigious Sustainability Award; which is only awarded to schools that have won the Green School Award more than once. RFS participates in the municipality’s Green Schools Project every year and has won various awards.
The Lower School had received the “Green School” Award in 2012/13 and 2016/17. An achievement RFS is proud of, and a testimony of the school’s commitment to the responsible use and protection of the natural environment through conservation and sustainable practices.
The municipality’s Green Schools Project introduced the Sustainability Award this year to honor schools that had won the Green School Award more than once. RFS also received 2nd place for the Environmental Play Contest, and RFS student Riyad Hantoly was mentioned for his outstanding performance. The play, performed by the Lower School’s Environmental Club, also received awards for Best Script and Best Director.
The Lower School’s Environmental Club invites all Lower School students in grades 1-5 to participate in daily and seasonal activities that help keep the school clean, maintain the organic garden, minimize use of plastic on campus, and spread environment awareness in everyday school life. One of the teachers in charge of this club, Rana Zeibak, received the Most Dedicated Teacher Award for her amazing work.
RFS students are encouraged to modify their behavior and educate others about environmental issues. Students at the school have learned to moderate their consumption of water and electricity, recycle and reuse solid waste, renovate and improve upon their school’s organic garden, as well as take part or lead other environmental projects in cooperation with local environmental groups or official committees.
Environmental Stewardship is one of our school values. Our environmental awareness program started inside our KG- classrooms years ago, using the motto “Reduce-Reuse- Recycle” and from there it spread to the whole school as well as other local schools.
