The​ ​family of the Ramallah​ ​Friends​ ​School​ mourns the loss of Khalil Mahshi, ​an​ ​extraordinary​ and cherished soul ​of​ ​its​ ​community  who served the school from 1986-1994 as the​ ​Upper School​ ​Principal​ ​and​ ​later​ ​as​ ​the​ ​RFS​ Director.   Mr. Mahshi was born in Ramallah in 1951, and died after a short illness in Amman, Jordan on the 1^st of January 2017.

During​ ​his​ ​time​ ​at​ ​RFS,​ ​Mr. Mahshi led the school with passion, courage and vision.  Despite turbulent times in modern Palestinian history and the breakout of the first Intifada in 1987, Mr Mahshi’s leadership showed resilience and bravery.  With regular school closures and the continued threat of violence, he was instrumental in offering alternative means to furthering Palestinian education by establishing the Educational Network – a group of organizations and individuals who, in the absence of a Palestinian Ministry of Education and confining military occupation, provided guidance on innovative education and curricula.  Mr. Mahshi believed​ ​that​ ​good​ ​education​ ​is​ ​the​ ​path​ ​to​ ​Palestinian​ ​freedom. 

​​​Those​ ​who​ ​worked​ ​with​ ​Mr​ ​Mahshi,​ ​or​ ​studied​ ​at​ ​the RFS​ ​during​ ​his​ ​time​ ​of​ ​leadership, remember​ ​him​ ​with​ ​love​ ​and​ ​respect.​ ​​ ​He​ ​will be revered as​ ​a​ ​change​ ​agent --  ​an​ ​educator ahead​ ​of​ ​his​ ​time,​ ​who​ ​led​ ​with​ ​humility ​and​ ​grace. ​  Mr. Mahshi was known for working collaboratively and was most comfortable taking decisions through​ ​consensus​ ​and​ ​a participatory​ ​approach​ ​that​ ​reflected​ ​the true​ ​spirit​ ​of​ ​Quaker​ ​education​ ​and​ ​values.​  His impact on the RFS mission and vision are enduring and felt to this day. Mr. Mahshi touched​ ​the​ ​lives​ and hearts​ ​of​ ​many students and colleagues and will be missed tremendously.  

After​ ​leaving​ ​RFS,​ ​Mr. Mahshi​ ​helped​ ​found​ ​the​ ​Palestinian​ ​Ministry​ ​of​ ​Education and was later appointed as the first Arab director of the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP) in Paris 2010-2014.  Mr. Mahshi also served as chairperson and senior education consultant to the UNESCO and UNICEF on crafting and planning the integration of Syrian refugees in education in Jordan, and also finalizing Afghanistan’s 3^rd National Education Strategic Plan.

For over 40 years, Khalil Mahshi was​ ​an​ ​exceptional​ ​educator​ ​who​ ​left​ ​behind​ ​a momentous​ ​body​ ​of​ ​work​ ​in​ ​education in Palestine, Jordan, France, and Afghanistan.​  He​ ​will​ ​be​ ​remembered​ ​as​ ​a​ ​pioneer​and visionary Palestinian educator​ ​and​ ​a​ ​truly​ ​extraordinary​ ​human being.   

Friends United Meeting and the​ R​amallah Friends School  ​community​ of former and present staff, teachers, board members, students and alumni, ​mourn  Khalil Mahshi’s ​untimely​ ​death​ ​and​ ​extend ​sincerest​ ​condolences​ ​to​ ​his wife​, RFS Alumna and former colleague, ​Suheir​ ​Azzouni​-Mahshi ​and​ ​his​ ​children​ ​Layan,​ ​Lour​ ​and​ ​Saji.​ ​​ ​

We​ ​pray​ ​for​ ​his​ ​soul​ ​to​ ​rest​ ​in peace​ ​and​ ​for​ ​his​ ​family​ ​to​ ​find​ ​solace​ ​in​ ​his​ ​incredible​ ​memory​ ​and​ ​legacy.

نعي أستاذ فاضل – المربَي خليل محشي                                           

(1951-2017)

"كنا عائلة واحدة بكل أفرادها يعملون معا للحفاظ على منزلهم (مدارس الفرندز) مرتبا ونظيفا لنتمكن نحن، وأطفالنا، و الأجيال القادمة من الاستمتاع  والافتخار به." – خليل محشي، مدير عام مدارس الفرندز، الكتاب السنوي 1993.

تنعى أسرة مدارس الفرندز  فقيدها الأستاذ والمربي الفاضل خليل محشي، الذي خدم المدارس بين عامي 1986-1994 كمدير المدرسة الثانوية (مدرسة الفرندز للبنين) ولاحقا كمدير عام لمدارس الفرندز. وُلد محشي في رام الله عام 1951، وتوفي بعد مرض عُضال في العاصمة الأردنية عمان في الأول من يناير 2017.

امتاز  الأستاذ خليل محشي أثناء قيادته للمدرسة بروح طيبة تتحلى بالشجاعة والمحبة، وأوجد لها رؤيا تربوية مبتكرة. لدى اندلاع الانتفاضة الفلسطينية الأولى عام 1987 ومرور الشعب الفلسطيني بأصعب المراحل في تاريخه الحديث، قاد الاستاذ خليل المدرسة بشجاعة وصمود بالرغم من الإغلاق المستمر للمدارس والتهديدات الدائمة بالعنف، وتضييقات الاحتلال الإسرائيلي على كافة مرافق الحياة الفلسطينية. وكان له دور فعال في إيجاد وتقديم سبلٍ تربوية بديلة تهدف لتعزيز التربية في فلسطين، من خلال إنشاءه مركز الإعلام والتنسيق التربوي الفلسطيني، الذي تكوَن من منظمات تربوية ومربيين، وعمل على طرح مناهج وأساليب تربوية مبتكرة في ظل عدم وجود وزارة للتربية والتعليم. كان الأستاذ خليل دائما يؤمن بأن الطريق الوحيد لحرية الشعب الفلسطيني هي التعليم.

يُعتبر الأستاذ خليل مربَيا تربويا فاضلا استبق عصره، قاد بتواضع وشغف. وعمل بشكل تعاوني وجماعي مع كافة الزملاء فكان يتخذ القرارات بالتوافق والتشارك وهو ما يعكس الروح الحقيقية لقيم ومباديء طائفة الكويكرز. كان للأستاذ خليل تأثيرٌ قيَمٌ ودائم على مسيرة ورؤيا مدارس الفرندز ما زلنا نشعر به حتى يومنا هذا. مسَ الأستاذ خليل حياة الكثيرين من الطلاب والموظفين وسنفتقده بشكل كبير.

ساهم الأستاذ خليل محشي في تأسيس وزارة التربية والتعليم الفلسطينية بعد مغادرته مدارس الفرندز. وعُين لاحقا مديرا لمعهد اليونسكو الدولي للتخطيط التربوي في باريس بفترة 2010-2014. وعمل أيضا مديرا ومستشارا لليونسكو واليونسيف في صياغة وتخطيط عملية دمج اللاجئين السوريين في سلك التربية والتعليم بالأردن. كما ساهم بوضع خطة استرتيجية للتربية والتعليم في أفغانستان.

خدم الأستاذ خليل محشي قطاع التربية والتعليم لعهد يمتد أكثر من 40 عاما، وكان مربيا استثنائيا ترك وراءه تاريخا حافلا بالإنجازات التربوية في فلسطين، فرنسا، الأردن، وأفغانستان. وسيُذكر دائما رائدا ومربيا فلسطينيا وإنسانا استثنائيا.

تنعى جمعية (Friends United Meeting) ومدارس الفرندز ممثلة بموظفيها السابقين والحاليين، مدرِسيها، أعضاء مجلس أمنائها، طلابها وخريجيها، وفاة الأستاذ خليل محشي، رحمه الله، وتتقدم بخالص التعازي لزوجته، خريجة المدرسة وزميلتنا السابقة السيدة سهير عزوني-محشي، وأبناءه ليان ولور وساجي.

نُصلِي لروحه الرقود بسلام ولعائلته أن تجد العزاء في ذكراه ومسيرته القيَمة والمشَرِفة.
