RFS Named IB Primary Years Programme Candidate School

“Our selection to join this world-class education system is a testament to the breadth and depth of the education we provide at RFS. This is the beginning of a wonderful journey that will greatly enhance our Lower School and provide transformational learning opportunities to both students and faculty.”
—Joyce Aljouny, RFS Director

RAMALLAH—Ramallah Friends School has been named an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme candidate school. The Primary Years Programme is an international educational and curriculum framework for students between the ages of 3 and 12.

The Programme encourage students to think globally and prepares them for the “intellectual challenges of further education and their future careers, focusing on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside”.

The addition of the Primary Years Programme allows RFS to pursue authorization as an IB Continuum School. IB Continuum Schools are schools that offer IB programs for both primary and secondary education. Following the implementation of the Primary Years Programme, the Lower School will join the RFS Upper School as an IB World School. These are schools around the world that share a common philosophy—a commitment to a high quality, challenging and international education.

Joyce Aljouny, RFS Director, believes the program is an important step in continuing to support RFS’ rigorous curriculum and global outlook. “Our selection to join this world-class education system is a testament to the breadth and depth of the education we provide at RFS. This is the beginning of a wonderful journey that will greatly enhance our Lower School and provide transformational learning opportunities to both students and faculty.”

Acceptance as a Primary Years Programme Candidate School was the result of a combined effort by the entire RFS community over the past two years. Administrators and faculty were required to submit a comprehensive application to IB, detailing specific programming, curriculum information and implementation plans. The application process offers an opportunity to reflect on all aspects of the school and provides inspiration for continuous improvement.

RFS will work with IB over the next several years to implement the programme in its entirety. IB will provide curriculum and professional development support to RFS throughout the process.
